Everyone loves masterfully crafted book characters, but what does it take to bring one to life? Wrestling with fictional characters is a familiar pastime for experienced as well as new writers. Yet, every reader who cracks open a book expects to be fascinated by the people they meet there. It’s an ongoing struggle to create realistic characters who fulfill all the functions of story and resonate with the reader as real, engaging people. In this class, we will learn the basics of writing characters and the ways to form and maintain realistic, entertaining individuals that inhabit our stories.
Your Instructor: Oksana Marafioti is a professional book editor and coach. She’s the author of the best-selling memoir American Gypsy (FSG, 2012) and the urban fantasy Donatti’s Lunatics (2018). Her writings have appeared in Time, LA Times, Rumpus, Slate, and other publications. Oksana was the 2013 Library of Congress Literary Award recipient, the 2020 recipient of the Picador Excellence in Literature Award, and the 2022 recipient of the Nation Endowment for the Arts.
