Time: 4:30pm - 6:30pm PST

Cost: $25/$20 for members

Class Level: Emerging - Intermediate

As writers, we love the art of writing but not so much the business of publishing. However, when we want to share our work with readers, it becomes important to learn about the publishing industry. Book publishing can be quite confusing, especially now when the options seem unlimited, but it's not as chaotic as most assume. In this presentation, we'll explore the pros and cons of the five key book publishing paths, talk about various submission processes, discuss the benefits of publishing in magazines, and learn how to develop a publishing plan best suited to our needs as writers.

Your Instructor: Oksana Marafioti is the author of American Gypsy: A Memoir (FSG, 2012). Her writings have appeared in Rumpus, Slate, and Time magazines, literary journals The Fairy Tale Review and Pilgrimage, and in several anthologies. Oksana was the 2013 BMI - Library of Congress Literary Award Recipient. In 2016, she was the U.S. Government-sponsored literary ambassador to the Czech Republic. She was the 2020 recipient of the Picador Excellence in Literature Award from the University of Leipzig, Germany. A classically trained pianist, Oksana also holds a B.S. in Cinematography and an MFA in Creative Writing.
