Class Level: Emerging - Advanced

Link and materials will be emailed at least 30 minutes before class.

While there are tons of resources on finding your writing voice, there's precious few on using your writer voice. Reading your work in front of an audience is an inevitable part of the writing life; come learn how to give a dynamic, killer reading, whether it's your first or your hundredth.

We'll discuss how to prepare and practice effectively -- and then, we will learn by doing, in a super supportive live lab. After, you'll learn how to approach venues and organizers to secure reading time in the future.

Bring 5 pages of prose or 5-7 poems to class (preferably your own work, but you can bring work you admire, instead).

Your Instructor: Caren Gussoff Sumption is a sci fi, horror, and literary fiction writer, living in south Seattle, WA. The author of 6 books and more than 100 short stories, Caren received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 2008, was the Carl Brandon Society’s Octavia E. Butler Scholar at Clarion West. Her most recent novella -- a deep space, post-colonial comedy of manners called "So Quick Bright Things Come to Confusion" -- will be out from Vernacular Books in September, 2022.
