Often in unexpected ways, political protest changes the world and our perception of social reality: by raising new questions, by prefiguring new ways of living, by deepening our sensibility and social awareness. Through selected readings and writing prompts, we'll explore in this two-hour workshop the poetics and politics of writing on political protest across fiction and nonfiction genres. The workshop will also offer an overview of the publishing industry: what agents, editors, magazines, newspapers, and presses are known for publishing writing on political protest? We'll discuss in closing how to pitch pieces and projects on the topic.
Your Instructor: Eraldo Souza dos Santos is a writer interested in the history and politics of social movements. In his current book project, he offers the first global history of civil disobedience. His writing has appeared in The Diplomat, The Washington Post, World Politics Review, and elsewhere. He is a 2022 LA Review of Books Publishing Fellow.
