Take your adventures from the road onto the page with this three-class exploration of the essentials of a good travel story. Together, we’ll examine the key components of a compelling story that captivates readers and transports them to another world.

Part 1: Introduction to Travel Writing

In the first part of the course, we will explore the art of travel writing and its various forms. We will discuss the different genres of travel writing, such as memoirs, guidebooks, and feature articles, and the unique characteristics that define them. We will also examine the importance of research and the role of the writer in creating an immersive travel experience for readers. We will begin a group brainstorming session using writing prompts and your own personal travel experience to craft an engaging introduction.

Part 2: Crafting a Narrative Arc

In the second part of the course, we will delve into the structure of a good travel story. We will discuss the importance of creating a compelling narrative arc that engages readers from the beginning and takes them on a journey to a satisfying conclusion. We will explore the techniques of scene-setting, character development, and the use of sensory details to create a vivid and immersive experience for the reader. Using prompts and a story template you’ll begin to craft your own travelogue.

Part 3: Editing and Refining

In the final part of the course, we will focus on the importance of editing and refining your travel story. We will discuss the various stages of the editing process, from revising the first draft to polishing the final product. We will also explore the role of feedback and criticism in improving your writing, and the strategies for developing your own unique voice as a travel writer. You’ll receive personalized feedback and suggestions for where to pitch your story if publication is your goal.
