Worldbuilding is one of the most important aspects of many genre novels, and is something readers will be expecting and even anticipating! However, it's also a place where many authors get stuck -- overdoing it, getting overwhelmed, or becoming frustrated at how to incorporate it smoothly into a narrative. This class will focus on the practical steps of worldbuilding in sci-fi and fantasy. This will include developing world 'rules,' tools and tips to organize ideas, using research to ‘fill in’ holes, and good practices on guiding readers through a deep, rich, unfamiliar world without info-dumping.

Your Instructor: Premee Mohamed is a Nebula, World Fantasy, and Aurora award-winning Indo-Caribbean scientist and speculative fiction author based in Edmonton, Alberta. She has also been a finalist for the Hugo, Ignyte, British Fantasy, and Crawford awards. She is an Assistant Editor at the short fiction audio venue Escape Pod and the author of the 'Beneath the Rising' series of novels as well as several novellas. Her short fiction has appeared in many venues and she can be found on her website at www.premeemohamed.com.
