In this workshop, writers will look at the way objects and artifacts can be an evocative part of a piece of creative writing. Whether used as a starting point to spin off a tale, or incorporated as a magic part of the narrative, objects can be used as symbols, help move a story forward, or become part of the emotional tone of a piece of writing. We will look at examples of writers using objects in a variety of texts varying from the ancient epic of the Kalevala to French postmodern writers, to the creative nonfiction work of Eudora Welty. We will do a variety of creative writing exercises to generate new work, with the goal of incorporating evocative objects and artifacts in our own writing!
